In the wake of long-term teen pregnancy prevention efforts, communities are looking for new and innovative projects that engage youth and make a difference. This workshop will follow the development of a youth-empowered teen pregnancy prevention program in a semi-rural agricultural community on the Central Coast of California. The program’s goals included 1) creating informative and on-the-edge media that teens would respect 2) providing mentoring, training, and technical support to youth to develop their technical skills, self-confidence, and exposure to new career possibilities, and 3) improving access to contraceptives for sexually active teens. The presentation will focus on the implementation of a teen newspaper and placement of condom vending machines at teen hangouts.
Project staff and youth advocates will talk about how an empowered group of teens received training in public speaking, social marketing, and media outreach, and successfully developed a teen-led pregnancy prevention program in the midst of a conservative political and socio-economic environment. Participants will learn the importance of community mobilization in getting trendy condom vending machines placed in local shops and youth hangouts and the lessons learned in working with the media.
