Ronda Henry-Tillman, MD, Raymond André Watson, and Suzanne Klimberg, MD. Cancer Control Outreach Center, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, 300 South University Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72205

INTRODUCTIION Nationally, prostate cancer incidence is 60% higher in African-American (AA) than Caucasian men and among racial and ethnic groups AA men have the highest mortality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of partnership with the Arkansas Special Populations Access Network in improving education and increasing screening in AA men.

METHOD In November 2001 a partnership was initiated between the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation (APCF) and the Arkansas Special Population Access Network (ASPAN), to improve the efforts of the APCF in reaching, educating and increasing screening for prostate cancer in AA men in Arkansas. Digital rectal exam (DRE) and prostate specific antigen (PSA) were used for screening men 40 and older for prostate cancer.

A program was initiated that incorporated AA leaders, physicians and health care providers in the AA community. A culturally informed educational session was coupled with a screening session. Post-presentation, a question and answer session was conducted to assess fears, beliefs and understanding regarding prostate cancer.

RESULTS This evaluation tool found a general lack of knowledge about prostate cancer and its symptoms, screening and treatment among AA men. Based on the collaborative efforts between APCF and ASPAN the number of AA men educated and screened increased from 46 in 2001 to 271 in 2002 which reflects a 587% increase in participation by AA men.

CONCLUSION The outreach efforts by the APCF were significantly improved when partnered with the ASPAN group because it included much more focus on culturally appropriate methods and personnel.
