Abstract #64338

Identyfing competencies in public health ethics

James C. Thomas, MPH, PhD, School of Public Health, University of North Carolina, CB# 7435, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7435, 919-966-7434, jim.thomas@unc.edu

In February of 2002 the governing board of the American Public Health Association adopted its first code of ethics. With this historic achievement, public health defined an ethic distinct from bioethics and medical ethics. The Public Health Workforce Development group convened by CDC has identified the need to build on the code by identifying core competencies in public health ethics. In response, the Public Health Leadership Society, which spearheaded the development of the code of ethics, is taking the lead in developing the core competencies. It will be doing so in consultation with public health ethicists and representatives from national public health organizations. At this session a draft of competencies in public health ethics will be presented. The remainder of the time will be spent with those attending responding to the proposed competencies and suggesting any improvements.
