This presentation will examine aspects of the CDC’s Community Coalition Partnership for the Prevention of Teen Pregnancy. The presentation will be based on a synthesis of the findings from the studies that a team from the University of Alabama at Birmingham conducted for CDC. It will examine the range of interventions undertaken by the 13 grantees in the areas of reproductive health including both clinical services and sexuality education, youth development including education, employment and other activities, programs for pregnant and parenting teens, male involvement, and parent–child communication; as well as the amount of effort devoted to increasing community awareness, identifying community needs, organizing community working groups, and building community infrastructure. It will also describe the processes that the grantees went through in order to decide which interventions to undertake, the problems they encountered in implementing their interventions, and the methods that they used to determine whether the interventions were having the desired impact. These interventions will be reviewed in the light of CDC stated objectives for the initiative, its communications with the grantees, and what it required of the grantees in terms of reports and data collection. The presentation will highlight the lessons that can be learned from this initiative in such areas as the amount of direction from the funding agency (positive and negative impacts), feedback to grantees (more was wanted), problems in undertaking projects in a sensitive area (sexuality programs are controversial), and restrictions on use of federal funds (this created problems).

• - describe and evaluate the processes that communities use to implement programs addressed to adolescent pregnancy
• - suggest methods that a granting agency can use to enable its grantees to be more productive
