Health research, education, and promotion have overlooked the health needs of young Asian and Pacific Islander males. Research was conducted by the OCAPICA to determine the health needs of young API men in areas such as testicular cancer, sexual activity, alcohol/tobacco usage, and mental health. A needs assessment was performed with a sample size of 150 young API men to determine their health needs. Young API males were found to be at risk for numerous health needs. (An additional 400 surveys have been completed since this initial collection).
Over 70% of participants perceived their health as good to excellent. However, over 50% of participants were not cognizant of testicular cancer and did not know how to perform monthly self-exams. Many reported engaging in early sexual activity and early usage of alcohol and tobacco. Only 20% of the participants consistently used a condom during sexual activity. There was a marked under-utilization of available resources, including college health centers. The data suggests that health research and outreach is greatly needed for young API males.
In response, OCAPICA (in partnership with area colleges) developed the Got Ballz? campaign. After the initial survey, four focus groups were held to develop attractive messages and images that would positively influence young API male behaviors. Materials were developed that utilize designs and messages heavily influenced by current trends in API pop culture, such as party and import car show flyers. Additional materials are being developed. Data analysis, development of effective messages, and community partnerships will be discussed.
