One of the objectives of the AAPCHO’s BALANCE Program for Diabetes is to increase the availability of high-quality diabetes educational materials in various AAPI languages. Through a review of existing diabetes educational materials for AAPIs and input from advisory members, the National Diabetes Education Program’s (NDEP’s) 7 Guiding Principles was identified as a useful brochure covering general information about diabetes management. The content of this brochure was modified and translated in Chinese, Korean, Samoan, Tagalog and Vietnamese. AAPCHO worked with a team of three translators for each of the five languages, to translate from English into the AAPI language, to back translate to ensure that the content meaning was preserved, and to edit the translation. The materials then went through the process of revising and proofreading. A teleconference with the translators and project coordinator was held to discuss and finalize changes. A graphic designer typeset and developed the design and graphics for the brochure. The material was then field-tested by the target population to ensure that the materials were accurate, effective and appropriate. To increase accessibility of the diabetes educational materials, the materials will be linked to AAPCHO’s web site so that providers and people with diabetes may download them easily, in the language that they need.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will be able to identify the five main steps for developing culturally and linguistically appropriate diabetes educational materials.
• Participants will be able to describe different ways of engaging the target community in the development of educational materials to ensure their effectiveness and appropriateness.
