The study presents one of the largest known investigations of substance use prevalence among Asian and Pacific Islander (API) men who have sex with men (MSM). Using targeted sampling methods, we conducted individual interviews with 496 API MSM recruited from gay-themed venues in San Francisco. The sample included a diverse representation in terms of ethnicity, education, nativity, and degree of being "out" about their sexual orientation. The most common substances used during the past 6 months were hallucinogens (82%), speed/uppers (77%), cocaine or crack (73%), poppers or nitrites (68%), ketamine (65%), marijuana (56%), downers or other barbituates (56%), crystal (55%), and GHB (55%). Frequent alcohol use during the past 6 months was associated with frequency of attending gay clubs and having unprotected anal sex. Frequent drug use was associated with being U.S. born, not completing college, and degree of being being out. Party drug use and polydrug use were both associated with being U.S. born, frequency of attending gay clubs, attending circuit parties, and having multiple sex partners. We consider implications for targeted outreach and substance use treatment for API MSM.
