Are there common demographic characteristics and health behaviors in employees of small companies and small governments? Why learn about the demographic and behavioral profiles of such groups? Can such information be used to improve the health status of small work site employees? These questions provide the focus of this comparison study of two small work site groups. The two groups are from the southeastern United States. The employee groups do similar types of work. The study's convenience sample of 2,027 participants (n=1,041 government employees, n=986 small company employees)were seen in screening programs at their work sites. Health risk appraisal analysis used objectively measured and self-reported data to identify risk for disease and injury. Data analysis from work site screenings guided individual health promotion/disease prevention counseling and group education programs at the work site. Differences were noted between the groups in age, gender, ethnic group, and health behaviors. However, the comparison study noted similar risk profiles for chronic disease. A significance level of 0.05 was used in the study.
