Invasive cervical cancer (ICC) is one of the most preventable cancers, detectable through screening in early, pre-invasive phases. ICC incidence and mortality have declined significantly in the United States since the widespread use of the Papanicolou (Pap) test. Kentucky, however, continues to have some of the highest rates nationwide. Further research is needed to elucidate the contribution of risk factors, low screening rates and follow-up of abnormal Paps, in order to plan appropriate interventions to reduce ICC rates in KY. This pilot study sought to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a state-wide retrospective follow-up of women diagnosed with ICC. Cases were identified, located and interviewed, and with their permission, their medical records were retrieved to examine risk factors and pap screening history. The pilot investigation included 22 women with ICC. 14 were interviewed at a medical facility, 4 by telephone, 3 in their homes and one at another location, while 3 were lost to follow-up (88% response rate). Of the 22 women, 68% were £ 50 years old, 2 never had a Pap smear before diagnosis and 7 reported having a Pap within 3 years of diagnosis. Two were confirmed by medical records, and the other 5 are pending confirmation. Analysis of the questionnaire and data from the medical records will be presented at the conference, together with an overall evaluation of the pilot study and the lessons learned which will assist in conducting a successful large-scale study. Overall, this pilot demonstrates feasibility for a state-wide ICC study.
