Turning Point for Families (TPFF) in Hilo, Hawaii, is one of 10 federally-funded projects. TPFF has developed, implemented, and is in the process of evaluating an intervention using Native Hawaiian values, beliefs, and practices to address intimate partner and sexual violence among Native Hawaiians.
Ke Ala Lokahi, “The Pathway to Harmony” is a culturally-specific curriculum designed for Native Hawaiian batterers and victims/survivors. Its purpose is to nurture within each individual an awareness of the past, recognition of the reality of the present, and establishment of a physical and spiritual balance for the future. Presently, there are no comprehensive examination of existing programs that address sexual violence and intimate partner violence in Native Hawaiian groups. This demonstration project will attempt to respond to the evaluation of a culturally appropriate program that addresses sexual and intimate partner violence in Native Hawaiian families.
Focus of the presentation: The project involves a comparison of the culturally-specific program with the standard services provided by the agency. The presentation will focus on the development and implementation of the project. Lessons learned and theoretical information on the process evaluation will be discussed. If available, preliminary results from the outcome evaluation will be presented.
