The House of Ruth Maryland provides a safe, supportive, temporary community for battered women and their children. The onsite Health Suite is a shelter - academic partnership to provide comprehensive community health nursing services to abused women and their children. Health assessment data indicated that 82% of the residents are African American, more than 50% have no health insurance and about 65% are smokers when they enter the shelter. Recogonzing the health consequences for smoking the Wellness Circle and Health Suite have collaborated to implement a smoking cessation program: "Healthy Inspirations". The smoking cessation program is funded by the American Legacy Foundation. This presentation will describe a comprehensive health and wellness approach for smoking cessation among battered women, and strategies for developing and implementing a culturally relevant program. The discussion will include successful approaches for shelter staff and residents and shelter programmatic changes implemented to contribute to the success of the smoking cessation program.
