A Women's Health Center clinic in a large, urban public hospital used State Family Planning and Medicaid funding to develop and implement a program incorporating hepatitis B immunizations into routine family planning/reproductive and sexual health visits. Patients at the site included women with multiple sex partners, low income, underserved, homeless, monolingual, and substance-abusing women for whom hepatitis B vaccine had never been recommended. An assessment tool was developed for identifying women for whom hepatitis B vaccine was indicated. A protocol for hepatitis B vaccine administration was written. Schedules for hepatitis B immunizations were developed which coincided with return visit schedules for routine family planning/reproductive health services such as appointments for Depo Provera injections, birth control pill refill check-ups, clinical breast exams, and PAP smears. Various levels of staff were trained in the use of the above tools, protocols and schedules. This presentation will discuss the process used to implement hepatitis B vaccine administration to achieve maximum compliance within the context of routine family planning/reproductive health and sexual health visits for high risk women. The session will provide detailed information on how interested agencies can replicate this model.
