Each year, over 400,000 newborns are admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in the United States. The hospitalization of a baby in a NICU can be one of the most frightening, confusing, and overwhelming experiences for a parent. Emotional support and information is critical to these parents so that they can advocate for their baby and be involved in their baby's care. Empowering and supporting families in this way is ultimately important because it can lead to emotional well being and psychological adjustment for all family members. March of Dimes NICU Family Support, currently in three pilot sites, was developed to respond to the emotional and informational needs of NICU families during the NICU hospitalization, during the transition home and in the event of a newborn's death. Central to this model is the integration of consumer input into the program development process. Consumer input is vital to creating programs that are ultimately embraced by those who will be utilizing them. March of Dimes NICU Family Support includes: educational and emotionally supportive materials for NICU parents; services and materials for siblings, fathers, grandparents and diverse populations; the provision of meaningful photographic keepsakes; and relevant continuing education and support for NICU professionals to enhance sensitive caregiving to families. This presentation will describe March of Dimes NICU Family Support, including its program components; summarize data obtained from evaluation; provide recommendations for integrating consumer input into program development; and discuss the importance of family support and family centered care in NICUs.
