“Linking Public Health Nursing Practice and Education to Promote Population Health” a Division of Nursing grant awarded to the Center for Public Health Nursing at the Minnesota Department of Health, brought together 14 schools of nursing and 35 local and tribal health departments throughout the state to facilitate development of regional project teams. These teams are creating new models of clinical experiences that effectively prepare nursing students to practice population-based public health nursing. Data from a statewide assessment clearly indicated that a critical component of positive PHN clinical experiences are the presence of supportive staff PHN preceptors. As a result, the grant committed significant resources to developing local health department staff PHNs who are willing to serve as preceptors. Ongoing training continues to prepare preceptors to engage, support, nurture, and guide students in learning the PHN role. In addition to preceptor skill training, preceptors also receive training on the population-based theoretical framework (the Intervention Wheel) that most students learn in the classroom so that preceptors are comfortable with and competent in applying the population-based model to their PHN practice and answering students’ questions. This session will define the preceptor role and present the preceptor curriculum and training materials, with a special emphasis on learning styles. The session will also highlight the preceptor video that was developed by one of the regional projects. It will conclude by identifying challenges that the projects have encountered, such as differentiation between roles of preceptor and clinical instructor, and how these challenges are being resolved.
