The purpose of this paper is to inform public health educators of an academic health partnership designed at building healthy campus communities. The College Health Services and the School of Nursing, in an effort to improve the health of the college community, partnered in designing a nursing practice experience for baccalaureate students. This campus event, Healthy Campus 2010, emanates from Healthy People 2010, the national health objectives. The specific objectives of Healthy Campus 2010 will be detailed, including those elements which contributed to an effective collaboration among the College Health Services, School of Nursing, and various other units within the college community. An essential component of the planning phase is the formulation of the community health assessment/analysis. This project identifies topics for teaching/learning program offerings, designed by the nursing student at each level of the curriculum, incorporating strategies for community based interventions. Topics reflect current contemporary health issues with an emphasis upon lifestyle behaviors. This community based event, provides a unique leadership experience for senior nursing students who coordinate the project. The main focus is the development of partnerships with peers, colleagues, college community members and neighboring communities. From a public health perspective, Healthy Campus 2010 has enabled students to apply community-based nursing interventions: advocacy, health planning, health education, resource development and political action in their roles as coordinators, collaborators and leaders. The outcomes of Healthy Campus 2010 will be examined for success in making health the focus of a campus community.
