There are a few culturally competent interventions for preventing and controlling tobacco in the Latino communities and their ever more diverse populations. Few interventions have been validated beyond their original pilot population or sustained over a significant period of time. The Cuidando Mi Salud (Taking Care of My Health), a State of Illinois funded project, provided a comprehensive approach to tobacco prevention to deter Latino women and young women from starting to use tobacco trough their adolescent and reproductive years. The intervention utilized: a) a coalition of providers who were trained on tobacco prevention and cessation, b) Developed a Bi-lingual clearinghouse with information on clinical and educational tools, c) trained providers in the design and sustainability of culturally competent smoke-free services directed to Latino women, and d) designed and implemented a culturally competent media campaign to reinforce smoking prevention interventions, f) established a framework for legislative advocacy on Latino tobacco control.Evaluation results will be discussed.
