New guidelines by the Family Violence Prevention Fund and others encourage health practitioners to routinely ask about teen dating violence. This presentation will identify the urgency and importance of working towards an appropriate health system response to teen dating violence. This presentation will build on what is known about the prevalence, dynamics and consequences of teen dating violence, what teens have identified they need from service providers, and what is known about the success, challenges, and dangers of health system response to adult intimate partner violence. Particular challenges addressed will include the conflict between confidentiality/empowerment and mandated reporting, issues of adolescent girls identified as abusers and young men identifying as victims, special issues for pregnant teens, same sex violence, and non-dominant culture teens. Resource information and work in progress by the Wisconsin Health System Response to Teen Dating Violence working group will be shared.
