The San Francisco Bay Area has one of the largest and most diverse populations of native-born Asian Americans and Asian immigrants in the U.S. However, few members of these populations have undertaken careers in cancer prevention or outreach. The Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training (AANCART) is a 5-year, 5-site Special Populations Network funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). At the San Francisco site, we seek to train Asian-American cancer control specialists for the next generation. Our goal is to increase training opportunities, develop new investigators and grant-funded research, and promote participation in clinical and prevention trials. Our Pan-Asian Council of senior advisors, partners and 12 interns come from regional community-based organizations and universities and are of Asian Indian, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Japanese, Korean, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese ancestry. SF-AANCART staff guide the interns in reviewing the literature on cancer epidemiology and prevention and outreach activities for their populations, and preparing oral presentations and manuscripts for publication. Interns prepared 12 concept abstracts and 4 proposals for pilot project grant submissions to the NCI, 2 of which were funded. Two interns received funding for cancer awareness projects. Our community director and clinical director have provided technical assistance and made presentations at conferences, community-based organizations, English-as-a-Second-Language classes, and health fairs. In partnership with the SF AANCART Chinese Council, we organized a two-day academy highlighting lung and liver cancer control for Vietnamese and Chinese Americans.
