Objective: To study the prevalence of overweight and obesity and identify factors associated with overweight and obesity in adults living in Santa Clara County, California.

Methods: A cross sectional random-digit dialing telephone survey was conducted in Santa Clara County, California in 2000. A total of 2,547 respondents 18 years and older completed the survey which was administered in English or Spanish.

Results: Overall, 51.6% respondents were overweight or obese (95% CI: 49.6%, 53.6%); 59.5% (95% CI: 56.8%, 62.3%) among men and 43.3% (95% CI: 40.4%, 46.1%) among women. The prevalence of overweight/obesity was 52.2% (95% CI: 49.5%, 55.0%), 65.5% (95% CI: 61.2%, 69.8%), 69.2% (95% CI: 59.0%, 79.5%), and 35.4% (95% CI: 31.4%, 39.5%) respectively among Whites, Hispanics, African Americans, and Asians/other race-ethnic groups. Logistic regression analysis showed that male gender (OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.84, 2.70), older age (OR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.10, 1.64), lower education (OR: 1.53; 95% CI: 1.22, 1.93), former smoking (OR: 1.39; 95% CI: 1.10, 1.74), having diabetes (OR: 1.66; 95% CI: 1.03, 2.68), and hypertension (OR: 1.39; 95%: 1.10, 1.74) were associated with overweight and obesity. Whites (OR: 0.38; 95% CI: 0.23, 0.65) and Asian/others (OR: 0.22; 95%: 0.13, 0.38) were less likely to be overweight or obese.

Conclusion: Data suggested a high prevalence of overweight and obesity among the population. Male gender, Hispanic and African American race-ethnicity, lower education, being a former smoker, older age, and presence of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension were independent predictors for being overweight and obese.
