Primary care physicians are an essential component of the infrastructure of public health, however many clinicians do not know they have a public health role. The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) has developed a model for public health education for primary care residents in training that can remedy this situation. DHS has a major role in medical education since its hospitals are affiliated with three major medical schools (UCLA, USC, and King Drew) and these hospitals serve as the training site of about a third of the nearly 1,500 primary care residents in training in Los Angeles County. Heavy involvement in medical teaching however is not essential to the model developed. The components of the model and three years of experience with its implementation will be described focusing on lessons learned that can be helpful to others. Various educational and evaluation strategies have been tried, and some but not all have been useful. Other health departments could implement this model and its strategies and thereby increase the public health awareness of future clinicians.
