Abstract #58850

Healthy child care america's back-to-sleep campaign: Helping child care providers reduce the risk of SIDS in child care

Phyllis Stubbs-Wynn, MD, MPH, Infant and Early Childhood Branch, Maternal and Child Health Bureau, 5600 Fishers Lane, Room 18A-37, Rockville, MD 20857, 301.443.4489, pstubbs@HRSA.gov

The incidence of SIDS has decreased over 40 percent since the Back to Sleep Campaign initiated by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development was launched in 1992. Historically, child care was not identified as an audience needing support in SIDS risk reduction by Back to Sleep Campaign outreach initiatives or in the first edition of Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care Programs, developed by the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), Health Resources and Services Administration, that predated the Campaign and therefore did not include standards on SIDS. However, with the publication of the 2nd edition of Caring for Our Children, also developed and published by the APHA and the AAP, with support from the MCHB, in January 2002, there are now 8 SIDS risk reduction standards included in Caring for Our Children, 2nd Ed. This presents an opportunity to include Back to Sleep activities as a priority in a new initiative funded by MCHB and the Child Care Bureau called Healthy Child Care America Back to Sleep Campaign. This presentation will inform public health advocates and practitioners how they can become actively involved in promoting the Healthy Child Care America’s Back –to Sleep Campaign in their communities; how to use the new standards for education and training purposes and to incorporate SIDS risk reduction language in their state child care regulations.
