The goal of the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) is to prepare students from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter college and obtain degrees in the Health Professions. As a part HCOP, Northern Arizona University (NAU) has developed a college program for students throughout Arizona to support them by increasing their development of skills needed to stay in college. While the successful outcome of a program such as this is measured by the participants eventually becoming productive members of the health workforce, tracking and maintaining records over the course of years is a long-term effort. The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) is one of the methods that determine how students measure their progress in developing college survival skills. The LASSI is one of the most widely used learning strategy assessment tools. It measures thought processes as well as behaviors that have been demonstrated to contribute significantly to college success.1 Identified behaviors are: managing time, ability to concentrate, skills in selecting main ideas, using study aids, strategies for reviewing and self-testing, and test-taking. In the years 1999, 2000, and 2001, students took the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory both before and after completing the HCOP courses. These 101 students demonstrated an increase in each of the LASSI scales. The results of administering the LASSI Inventory demonstrate a short-term evaluation tool to determine the effectiveness of programs designed to support special populations in higher education in the health professions. This has implications for academic support programs that are required to demonstrate short-term progress.
