CVD risks factors (obesity, leisure time physical activity, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension) and their relation to heart attacks were examined in Hispanic, African-American and Caucasian elderly women. Green and Kreuters’ PRECEDE-PROCEED Model was used to identify predisposing, enabling, reinforcing, behavior and lifestyle and environmental factors related to prevalence of risk factors and heart attacks in the elderly women. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III data (N=2807) was used and national risk estimates were calculated using SUDAAN analyses. Risk estimates were identified by age group (65, 75, 85+), marriage, income, disability, education, rural/urban residence and perceived health. Obesity was 50% and the underweight rate was 20% in these elderly women. Certain CVD risk factor and heart attack prevalence rates were mixed across the racial/ethnic groups. Evaluation of HP2010 obesity, leisure time physical activity, smoking, cholesterol, hypertension and heart attack target objectives will be made, as well as suggestions for intervention for specific racial/ethnic groups.
