Young men of color who have sex with men are at high risk for HIV infection and transmission, as documented by a multi-year, 7 city venue-based study. In response to these data, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funds 27 HIV prevention projects for community-based organizations that target young men of color who have sex with men, their sex partners, and transgendered youth. The organizations are located in 14 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Presenters will describe the rationale for funding these projects, including a brief overview of the prevalence and incidence of HIV/AIDS among these men. Topics will include an overview of the types of HIV prevention interventions conducted by the organizations, such as individual-level interventions, HIV counseling and testing, and prevention case management. Also discussed with be innovative methods of recruitment and retention and how the organizations are attempting to reduce discrimination based on race, homophobia, HIV-infection status, and sexual identify. Lastly, presenters will describe the national evaluation of this initiative, including process data collected and analyzed to date and a proposed outcome evaluation of outreach activities for these men and consequent HIV counseling and testing interventions.
