Tomoaki Shinohe, Mr, Faculty of Nursing, Fukuoka Prefectural University, Ita 4395, Tagawa City, Fukuoka, 825-8585, Japan, 81-947-42-1849, shinohe@a3.rimnet.ne.jp and Nobuo Maeda, PhD, Professor and Chair, School of Social Work, The International University of Kagoshima, 10-902 Taniyama Chuo 5 Chome 27, Kagoshima City, 891-0141, Japan.

This paper will focus mainly on prevention as well as intervention programs related to elderly suicide. Part One of the paper will give an illustration of the status of suicide in Japan. We have more than 30,000 suicides every year from 1998, mainly due to economic reasons. Suicide levels among middle-aged males are increasing. Nevertheless available data (which will be featured in this paper) illustrate the fact that suicide among males over 75 is growing in intensity. Meanwhile suicide among elderly women is also increasing slightly. The paper will also highlight that cultural and weakening kinship structures as well as isolation are also responsible for the increasing level of suicide among the elderly in Japan. The paper will examine the suicide levels with particular reference to Akita Prefecture which has the highest rate of suicides among Japanese elderly. Prevention programs related to elderly depression and suicide will also be examined in detail. Social norms and social attitudes will also be discussed. The second part will focus on the impact of suicide on bereaved families. The third part will deal with the role of the Government and civil society including family, community, NPOs (Non Profit Organizations) in responding to the needs of elderly suicide in the society. The paper will conclude with some recommendations to promote inclusive programs for elderly suicide as well as their bereaved families in the society.
