Collective violence across the globe since the end of the cold war has been subject only to cursory examination using the methods of epidemiology. To date, information and analyses of the impact of wars on resident populations has taken place predominantly in the fields of sociology and political science. In this session information from many sources will be provided to describe the patterns, magnitude, and impact of collective violence on morbidity and mortality. Weaknesses in the definition, collection, and analysis of this information contribute to violence among affected individuals and groups. In particular, the definition of deaths indirectly due to conflict needs to be improved and careful epidemiologic studies should be carried out.

• To identify areas in need of additional information and research
