Learning Objectives:
Study Objective: This study explored the experiences of HIV positive young adult men who have sex with men (MSM), who had disclosed their HIV status to sex partners, family, friends, and others. Sample: Four young adult MSM, 22-29 years of age, recruited from community-based organizations, health clinics and social service agencies were interviewed. Methodology: An exploratory semi-structured interview technique was employed to identify salient patterns and themes associated with disclosing a positive HIV diagnosis. A self-administered demographic survey questionnaire was used to create a demographic profile of study participants. Findings: Content analysis of the semi-structure interviews yielded two major themes related to disclosure and living with HIV. The decision to disclose HIV status was mediated by ones conscience, motive and situation. Living and coping effectively with HIV was characterized by a conscious awareness of the impacts of HIV in daily life, and focusing beyond the physicality of HIV, and maintaining a positive perspective. Conclusions: The process of HIV disclosure is complex, involving not only personal desires but also the quality of interpersonal relationships, ethical and moral principles, fear of rejection and the stigma of a politicized condition. For health professionals, understanding the personal values, societal influences, and barriers associated with disclosing HIV status is critical to supporting the HIV positive individual. Interventions aimed at reducing HIV transmission should include effective decision-making, coping skills and strategies in order to promote a healthy lifestyle. Further exploratory research is warranted to develop effective HIV prevention programs.
Identify three factors associated with HIV disclosure among young adult MSM.
Describe three strategies used by MSM to cope with a positive HIV diagnosis.
