Purpose: Social capital is an ecological concept that has potential importance as a mediating variable between the social environment and individual health, although at present, the concept remains theoretically and operationally underdeveloped. Using the Hybrid Model of Concept Development, this program of research has moved from the theoretical phase of literature synthesis, to the fieldwork phase that explores the utility of a selected conceptual framework. Pilot analysis has shown the usefulness of employing an expanded conceptual framework of social capital to understand one community that was unable to mobilize mutually beneficial collective action. The purpose of this study is to continue to advance this program of research by now exploring the utility of the framework in a contrasting community setting that was successful at mobilizing mutually beneficial collective action. Methods: This is a focused, ethnographic, case study of a community using fieldwork and participant observation. Qualitative data is generated from formal interviews, informal conversations, field notes, and public documents to understand the social dynamics of a community that has successfully demonstrated their ability to mobilize mutually beneficial collective action through the implementation of a Living at Home – Block Nurse Program. Data analysis and interpretation employs a top-down approach that uses an expanded conceptual framework of social capital. Findings: The current phase of the study is still underway with completed findings anticipated in June 2003. Conclusions: The discussion will focus on the utility of using the expanded conceptual framework of social capital in relationship to research and practice application.
