The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s WISEWOMAN projects provide screening and lifestyle interventions for uninsured and low-income women for the purpose of preventing and/or reducing cardiovascular disease risk factors. Along with the provision of effective interventions, one of the challenges of the program is to refer women to a medical care system that provides affordable pharmaceuticals for treatment of hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. This project examined nationwide resources for free or low cost pharmaceuticals that may be useful for WISEWOMAN providers and any other providers who serve low-income or uninsured clients. Literature review, World Wide Web and LEXIS/NEXIS searches were conducted. Standardized interviews were conducted with pharmaceutical companies and open-ended interviews were conducted with WISEWOMAN staff. This describes the Drug Pricing Program, pharmaceutical companies’ indigent patient programs, vocational rehabilitation, World Wide Web price comparisons, and state resources.
