Abstract, APHA 2003 National Conference Nursing Informatics in a Public Health Setting

The national agenda for public health informatics calls for the development and implementation of a person-based, integrated data system. The Ventura County Public Health Department (VCPHD), Community Health Nursing Division has developed a documentation system utilizing NANDA, NIC, and NOC to support outcome-based nursing practice. NANDA, NIC, and NOC were selected as they best represent the universal language of nursing, were developed through credible methods, and each has a mechanism in place to manage revisions. These 3 standardized languages put nursing into words by identifying the critical thinking and interpersonal dimensions of nursing practice. The computer application, NRS Phase III Outcomes, enables the Public Health Nurses (PHN) to link individual cases to family referrals and document on-going assessments. The PHNs choose the appropriate nursing diagnosis that are cross indexed to all the public health nursing interventions that will accomplish the weighted outcomes associated with that diagnosis. NRS Phase III Outcomes was designed to capture the efficacy of nursing outcomes by Public Health Nurses and provide management with systematic reports. This presentation will describe the development and implementation of this dynamic system.

Session Objectives: At the end of this session the participant will be able to: Describe the process of developing the nursing documentation system. Outline the process of implementation and use of the NRS Phase III Outcome computer application within the VCPHD. Discuss the possibilities of sharing an outcome-based nursing documentation system for Public Health Nursing informatics study.
