ISSUE: Is the Internet a technological trap, encouraging high-risk behaviors amongst men who have sex with men? MSM chat rooms have been linked to STD outbreaks nationwide. Many organizations wish to address on-line risks, but lack models to create effective new programs. Proper interventions can sensitize MSM to risk, build skills and self-efficacy. Conference participants will learn new methods to transfer behavioral theory, and produce ethically staged Internet based interventions. SETTING: Local on-line chat rooms populated with MSM in urban or rural areas. PROJECT: Facilitators will explore reasons why Internet introductions can lead to riskier sexual behaviors, especially amongst MSM who do not self-identify as gay. Data will be shared about increasing Internet access amongst low income MSM and MSM of color, and the frequency of Internet use for initiating sexual contact. Methods for adapting behavioral models will be explained, with data drawn from two test city models. This interactive workshop will demonstrate methods for evaluating program deliverables without compromising client confidentiality. Resources for securing computers and software necessary to start programs will also be shared. RESULTS: Cyber-interventions can influence community norms. They bring unique ethical and logistical challenges, but also the promise of potentially geometric diffusion of innovation. LESSONS LEARNED: By the end of this workshop, conference participants will 1. Understand why Internet introductions can lead to riskier sexual behaviors. 2. Know how to influence community norms in the new venue. 3. Gain the tools to create effective, ethically staged interventions, and to evaluate outcomes without compromising confidentiality.
