Health communication is a new focus area in Healthy People 2010. Since the launch of Healthy People 2010 in January, 2000, significant progress has been made in developing data sources for the objectives in the focus area and identifying opportunities for action. The six objectives cover use of the Internet for health improvements, health literacy, provider-patient communication, research and evaluation of communication programs, and Centers of Excellence in health communication. Action plans have been developed for each of the objectives. The action plans will be presented to participants for discussion. The majority of the session will focus on three specific action plans: health literacy, quality of health Web sites, and Centers for Excellence in Health Communication. Speakers will discuss the action plans in detail and engage participants in generating additional action steps, identifying key resources, programs and organizations to involve in the implementation of the action plans, and outlining short-term opportunities for events and activities that will promote progress on the objectives.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Identify one implementation strategy and one action step for each of the 6 health communication objectives in Healthy People 2010. 2. Discuss additional specific opportunities for action on the health literacy, quality of health Web sites, and Centers for Excellence objectives. 3. Assess their organization’s role in the implementation of action plans for the health communication objectives.
