Over the past four years APHA, ASTHO ,CDC, NACCHO, NALBOH, NNPHI and PHF have partnered to develop clear measurable performance standards for state and local public health systems and their governance. The ten Essential Services which describe the full range of public health responsibilities provided a framework for the development of the Standards. In order to improve the quality and accountability of public health practice, it is important to utilize valid, reliable, systematic measurements that will provide the data necessary for public health systems enhancement. Assessment instruments for local and state public health systems have been finalized and approved by the federal government. The Standards are now ready for implementation by public health organizations to assure that strong and effective public health systems are in place to deliver essential public health services.
Learning Objectives: · Understand the relationship between essential public health services and performance measurement · Gain a better understanding of the relationships of key partners in a public health system · Identify ways to access online resources and technical assistance for helping to improve public health systems’ performance · Understand the importance of adopting the Performance Standards for continual quality improvement of public health practice
