Session: Strengthening the Workforce Insfrastructure for Emergency Preparedness

Strengthening the Workforce Insfrastructure for Emergency Preparedness
The need for a coordinated national approach to public health workforce development has been discussed for over a decade since the IOM report. Although there have been many individual successes, a gap remains between needs of front line staff and the opportunities to acquire competencies that will enhance staff capacity for public health and emergency preparedness. National plans and new federal funds for emergency preparedness, are providing rich opportunities for academic centers, the practice community, and federal, state and local agencies to join forces to train working professionals in public health preparedness while addressing scholarship and excellence in practice-based curricula and research. In this session, representatives from CDC-funded Academic Centers for Public Health Preparedness will share how these centers are addressing local/regional workforce needs while contributing to improved coordination at the national level.
Learning Objectives: 1- Describe key elements of a national plan for public health workforce development specific to bioterrorism and emergency preparedness. 2- Describe how individual Academic Centers for Public Health Preparedness are contributing to bioterrorism, emergency preparedness and workforce development at the local, regional, and national level and discuss achievements and lessons learned. 3- Discuss approaches to forming/enhancing relationships between state and local public health departments and schools of public health in assessing training needs and provide training to public health practitioners.
