Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this institute is to facilitate the use of data products form the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Specifically, we want to encourage participants to use public use data files from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), and the National Hospital Ambulatory Care Survey (NHAMCS) components of the National Health Care Survey (NHCS). The presentations will provide helpful information about the surveys' designs, file content, the construction of analytic files, and examples of analysis of the data. The move toward objective-based strategies, e.g., Healthy People, for improving health outcomes and for creating efficiencies in the health care system has increased the need for valid and reliable methods of measuring the health status of people and the use and distribution of health care resources. The NCHS, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), produces the premier national survey data on health and health care. Researchers, academicians, public health practitioners, policymakers, health care administrators, businesses, journalists, educators, and others rely upon these data to inform them about the current public health environment and to help them plan for the future.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the institute, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the major sections of the NHIS and the NAMCS/NHAMCS 2. Describe several major survey variables 3. Determine if an estimate is reliable 4. Describe appropriate ways to analyze the data 5. List appropriate statistical methods to be used in analysis 6. List ways of obtaining the data 7. Navigate the NCHS website 8. Describe how to manipulate files for in-depth analysis 9. Combine data files from multiple years or settings 10. Understand how to use the NCHS Research Data Center 11. Understand the importance of confidentiality issues 12. List some of the strengths and weaknesses of using complex survey data 13. Point out some of the major uses for NCHS data
