Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this institute is to inform health care workers of all types what transgender/transsexual means and what implications it has towards the treatment of transgender / transsexual individuals within healthcare settings. Transgender / transsexual men and women who are involved in the health care arena within various areas (research, social work, and consumer) will be conducting the training. Health care practitioners tend to have little knowledge or understanding about transgender/transsexual issues. This training will help people begin to develop and understand that they can take back to their organizations.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this conference participants will be able to: 1. Understand current transgender terminology and identity, and the differences and similarities between Male-to-Females and Female-to-Males; 2. Comprehend those issues confronting transgendered / transsexual people with regard to access of health care as demonstrated in existing research; 3. Be able to cite examples of personal, institutional and societal barriers to access of care by transgendered / transsexual people and identify strategies to improve their access of health care; 4. Know what are the priority areas for future research for this population and how to employ appropriate and inclusive data collection methodologies to improve knowledge of it.
