| This session will provide a well-grounded discussion divided into three parts.
Part I—The presentation will explore and define various subpopulations of the underrepresented public. It will address societal views and labeling of populations. A broad socioeconomic- population based approach addressing diverse factors including but not limited to; race, gender, economics, and religion. This presentation will discuss under-representation in health professions and in decision-making processes that effect health resources.
Part II--The presentation will define and address the social determinants (i.e. various institutions, social networks, and public policy) of health and how they impact health outcomes for underrepresented populations and affect choices. Structural inequalities such as; lack of access to quality health care, inability to get a quality education, lack of quality housing, and other environmental adverse living conditions that affect people’s choices and subsequent behavior will also be discussed.
Part III--The last presentation will present action-oriented suggestions regarding the improvement of the health status, conditions, influence, and needed actions to improve representation. It will address if social determinants of health improve the lives of the underrepresented public. And lastly, what public health professionals and key players need to do to ensure the underrepresented do not remain unrecognized and the timelines necessary for taking action.
We will close by taking comments and suggestions on what the APHA might do to improve the health of the underrepresented populations either through EHOC or in other ways.
