In 2001, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) released a new community strategic planning tool, Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships (MAPP). MAPP provides guidance and tools for conducting a community health improvement process. After one year in the field, it is apparent that MAPP is flexible enough to be easily customized to meet the varied needs of different communities. It is also apparent that sites are having some of the same experiences, challenges, and lessons learned. For example, demonstration sites are learning about the resources and support required to implement a MAPP process, the need to spend significant time in preparing to initiate MAPP, and the types of organizations and representatives that need to be involved. This session will begin with a brief overview of the MAPP process. The majority of the time, however, will be devoted to presentations and a discussion about the experiences and lessons learned from selected demonstration sites implementing MAPP. This session will be of interest to state and local health department staff, community partners, and others interested in MAPP or similar community health improvement initiatives.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the phases of the MAPP process, 2. Explore creative approaches to overcoming some of the challenges associated with implementing MAPP, 3. Identify tips for how to initiate MAPP based on the experiences of the demonstration sites.
