The purpose of this session is to highlight important activities in birth defects and developmental disabilities epidemiology. A number of different research areas and methodologies will be highlighted. Specific presentations will: examine the role of important risk factors like smoking and birthweight on childhood disability; highlight the efforts to prevent birth defects and developmental disabilites by targeting lead poisoning and folic acid prevention; examine trends in birth defects suveillance in international settings; and examine national policies for ultrasound screening to identify fetal anomalies prenatally. | |||
Learning Objectives: 1. Identify the key factors in birth defects surveillance. 2. Recognize the impact of public health prevention efforts in lead and folic acid. 3. Identify the importance of birth weight in childhood disability. | |||
