| A.C.T. ACCESS, Communication, AND TRUST: BARRIERS TO PRENATAL CARE This session will focus on the client/patient, who is pregnant, and her perception of her needs and her care. A set of interesting abstracts, which discuss various programmatic approaches to improving both access to prenatal care as well as the patient’s attitude toward such care has been developed. The patient and her family are considered in these research efforts. The different presentations deal with the awareness of and response to barriers to care – both real and perceived. The variety of reports include efforts by a local health department to improve care in their clinics as well as a major research effort by a university on evaluating a pregnant woman’s subjective response to the care given and its impact on the outcome of the pregnancy. The significance of this work is increased as the access to care for publicly-funded obstetrical patients become more limited. The need to be sensitive to patient needs and concerns often gets lost in the shuffle of “just providing some services.” The importance of evaluating the factors involved in access to care is often underrated in its impact on the health status of the pregnant population, as well as the outcomes of the care given. | |||
