Over the past four years, ASTHO, NACCHO, NALBOH, PHF, and APHA have been working with CDC to develop three assessment instruments for state, local and governance public health systems as required by the National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP). The instruments having been field tested are now finalized and approved by the federal government. The program is ready for the next phase - Implementation. Resources necessary to undertake the assessment will be reviewed to provide assistance for users of the instruments. These include; a Users Guide, a Glossary, a Synthesis document and FAQ's. Panelists will provide information on the types of organizations that are essential components of a public health system and offer guidance regarding methods to convene and establish time commitments from these necessary partners to successfully complete the assessment process. Panelists will also discuss the availability of technical assistance and indicate how to request and receive such assistance. Further, discussions will also include the process of data analysis and the types of reports that will be generated from the assessment data provided to CDC. The value of utilizing the performance standards instruments as a comprehensive assessment of public health practice and capacity will be discussed in reference to the recent bio-terrorism activities.
