Recent events have highlighted the need for an effective National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) to link providers, public health, and the public. Previously, the Institute of Medicine, the National Research Council, and other authoritative bodies identified many serious health problems as well as opportunities to improve the health of individuals, communities, and the nation that could effectively be addressed by better use of information and communication technology. Experts conclude that what is needed is not just more technology, but a comprehensive effort to address practices and policies. They point to the lack of leadership for targeted and collaborative action as a major impediment. Information for Health: Strategies for Building the National Health Information Infrastructure was prepared by the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics(NCVHS) Work Group on the National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) to address these concerns. NCVHS is the Federal advisory body that provides recommendations to the Secretary on health information policy. This report highlights specific uses of the NHII by individuals, healthcare providers, and public health agencies. It shows the nature and benefits of information exchange among all three users. This presentation will give highlights from the report and identify specific areas where diverse stakeholders can play an important role.
