The Healthy People 2010 Leading Health Indicators are a set of 10 key public health issues selected to help motivate and guide Americans to take actions to improve their individual health as well as the health of their families and communities. The Indicators track and measure a set of 22 health objectives distilled from Healthy People 2010, the nation’s comprehensive prevention agenda. They rely on national data gathered primarily by Federal and State government entities. The Leading Health Indicators illustrate the linkages among different factors that profoundly influence the health of individuals, communities, and the Nation. The Indicators also focus our attention on critical health issues that can benefit most from our immediate and concerted efforts. The speakers in the session will discuss the most recent federal and state data on the Leading Health Indicators and the ways that the Indicators can be used to organize and promote health improvement activities.
