Effective management of public health performance is increasingly important with heightened attention on the functioning of public health agencies and state and local public health systems. Tools for assessing performance and capacity have become available recently, but using assessment results to make changes in public health infrastructure remains a challenge. Turning Point’s Performance Management Collaborative has worked for the first two years of its four-year project to gain insights into current performance management practices in public health and other fields. The Collaborative is a group of seven states and four national partner organizations. Members of this Collaborative will share insights of the performance management framework that they recommend. Key principles and components of a coordinated performance management system will be described. Implications of a system-wide performance management program for public health practice, for workforce development, and for public health research will be discussed by the panel.

Learning Objectives:

• 1.Describe current practices used by state public health agencies to manage performance.
• 2.Understand system-wide performance management concepts and tools to improve the health of the public.
• 3.Create awareness of practice, research and workforce development implications of the evolving work of the Performance Management Collaborative.
