Data integration capacity has expanded overtime with the development and sophistication of information technology. As organizations begin to adopt such technology, the building of strategic alliances has turned out to be a core prerequisite. It is a known fact that within the public health field critical data is collected in a myriad of disparate databases developed, owned and operated by the various agencies and programs found in local health departments. In such cases, data collection and maintenance efforts represent duplication of effort in that the various health programs gather much of the same data elements on the same group of clients. Clearly such practices also require clients to present and re-present their identifying information and documentation.
This panel presents the experience of the District of Columbia Department of Health (DCDOH) in its data integration activities, focusing on the importance of building strategic alliances in such efforts. The panel includes a presentation on the basic principles of data integration, and the security and privacy issues relevant to such an undertaking. Also discussed are three projects underway at DCDOH whose success is dependent upon building and strengthening strategic alliances.
