Public and corporate interest in drug abuse prevention waxes and wanes with the unfolding of events and circumstances in society. While at the present time, drug abuse problems are not given the white hot media attention that has occurred in the past, the prevalence and consequences of drug abuse, including in the workplace, remain substantial. This presentation will review the state of the art in worksite drug abuse prevention, including prevalence trends and the results of evaluation studies of program interventions. While the mandate in school-based prevention programs is to implement science-based strategies, the diffusion of the "Best Practices" approach into other settings is less common. The theoretical basis of common program strategies will be identified. Finally, theory will be outlined as a basis for prevention practice in the workplace.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the presentation, participants will be able to

• summarize evaluation results of worksite drug abuse prevention programs; 1)cite examples of theory-based worksite drug abuse prevention;
• identify and briefly explain which theories show promise as a framework for worksite based drug abuse prevention.
