Three major auto corporations and the International Union,United Autos Workers have been working together for more than five years to assess the health in communities with auto plants. The goal is to engage the full community in a process for improving health status and the efficiency of the health care system with the expectation that this will also control health care costs. The Lewin Group, under contract with the union and autos corporation, compiles quanitative and qualitative data to create a Community Assessment Factbook for each community to use as a planning and priority setting tool. The information is "benchmarked" with similar communities, national norms, and consensus based standards. One unique aspect of the factbook is a "Value Section" that compares quality, service utilization, cost, and payment indicators of the target community with comparison community benchmarks. This session will present the outcomes of the assessment process in four communities.
