Turning Point National Initiative lessons will be presented by a panel that will describe the results of 41 local public-private and community driven partnerships. The purpose of the partnerships was to conduct an assessment of community needs, implement public health systems improvements, and enlarge the ownership for public health action to the whole community. The partnerships were encouraged to reach out to under represented constituents, consider the social determinants of health, use an expansive and inclusive definition of public health and partnerships, and develop policy relevant responses to meet emerging public health problems. The partnerships created local community capacity to recognize and rapidly respond to public health issues, which is particularly timely since September 11, 2001.
