Growing the capacity for accessible community based healthcare systems is crucial in reducing disparities in primary care and preventive services for people with disabilities. The presentation includes disability awareness, diversity and disability, and Americans with Disability Act implementation strategies from the Disability Health Access training manual and companion resource compendium jointly developed by the North Carolina and Massachusetts Departments of Public Health. The manual and compendium offer training tools, guidance and resources essential to developing a healthcare infrastructure that is able to plan, implement and assess programs and services that meet the needs of people with disabilities.
The session will discuss disability as a unique demographic. It will introduce concepts for policy development, strategic planning and evaluation of general health programs and services as well as those targeting people with disabilities. Concepts include, preventing secondary disabling conditions, creating specific standards and indicators and developing outreach strategies. The session will provide specific resources helpful in promoting the health and wellness of people with disabilities. At the conclusion of the session, participant in this session will be able to:
„h Apply concept of disability as a natural part of the lifespan in primary health and prevention programs „h Articulate steps necessary to begin the process of developing community based programs that are welcoming to people with disabilities. „h Identify specific methods of outreach to people with disabilities „h Identify health resources to promote the health and wellness of people with disabilities including physical activity, nutrition, substance abuse, women°¦s health and domestic violence
