Abstract #50112

Using a community coalition to improve health for children, youth, and families

Dana S. Carr, MPH and Amy Graham. Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth, and Families, 3033 Wilson Blvd., Suite 600A, Arlington, VA 22201, 703-536-5996, dcarr@prevent.org

The Arlington County Partnership for Children, Youth, and Families in Arlington County, Virginia is a unique community arrangement that combines various governmental agencies, such as education, health, safety, and recreation, with community non-profit organizations, faith-based groups, and citizens. The goal of the Partnership is to develop and sustain a community that cares about children and families. To this end, the Partnership adopted an Assets Framework for its efforts. Based on the Search Institute of Minnesota’s research, the Assets Framework considers fundamental building blocks to a healthy youth and uses existing community resources to encourage healthy growth, rather than merely identifying risky behavior. The Partnership has taken a leadership role in bringing this initiative to the community through a variety of training sessions and community meetings. Surveys on both risk behavior and assets were conducted with adolescents in the spring of 2001 to assist in targeting community efforts to the areas of greatest need. Results of the surveys will be discussed in this presentation, as well as current efforts by the Partnership to use the data for policy and programmatic decision-making.
